What is breathwork?
The breath is our most accessible healing tool. It’s right under your nose — available in every moment. Yet most people have never been taught how to use it effectively. Breathwork is literally the practice of intentionally controlling one’s breathing, utilising specialised techniques to control the breath, therefore allowing the practitioner to control their physical, mental, and emotional state.
What are the benefits of breathwork?
Breathwork helps people:
- Release trauma and emotional blocks
- Reduce anxiety and calm the nervous system
- Improve focus, clarity, and sleep
- Reconnect to their bodies and emotions
- Experience profound states of peace and healing
- Access emotional resilience and energy
As we always say: “Master Your Breath, Master Your Life.”
What are the scientific or research-based benefits of breathwork?
There is a range of scientific and research-based benefits, primarily by influencing the body’s autonomic nervous system and brain activity. Numerous studies confirm that breathwork significantly lowers levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Slow, controlled breathing fosters parasympathetic activity (“rest and digest” response) and enhances heart rate variability, which are indicators of improved emotional resilience. Specific techniques, such as diaphragmatic breathing, have been linked to decreases in stress hormones such as cortisol.

By increasing oxygen flow to the brain, conscious breathing practices can boost cognitive functions, including concentration and decision-making. Techniques like Sama Vritti (aka square breath or box breathing) and slow breathing have been associated with increased alpha wave activity, signaling improved cognitive performance.
Mindful breathing aids in emotional regulation, promoting feelings of calm, relaxation, and alertness while reducing negative emotions like anger and confusion. Breathwork contributes to lower blood pressure and heart rate, improved sleep quality, and increased energy levels. It also supports a healthier immune system by optimising oxygen intake and reducing systemic inflammation. Moreover, it enhances heart rate variability, a marker of a more robust stress-response system.
From our own personal experience, research, and guiding others, it is abundantly apparent that breathwork does heal people in ways that nothing else can. After all, what is more important to the life of a human being than breath???
How can coaches integrate breathwork into their coaching practice?
Where do I start!? The majority of our students are coaches, medical professionals, and teachers seeking tools to support their clients!! We dive deep into this in our training, providing tips, ideas, and complete lesson plans for different goals, results, and intentions. However, here are some ways to integrate Breathwork into a coach’s practice.
Session Openers/Closers: Start a session with 1-2 minutes of mindful breathing to help clients arrive, centre themselves, and set an intention. Conclude with a short breath exercise to integrate insights and transition out calmly.
During Emotional Moments: When a client feels overwhelmed, anxious, or frustrated, offer a brief grounding breath exercise (e.g., three deep breaths, box breathing) to help them regulate their nervous system before continuing the conversation.
For Enhanced Focus: Before tackling a complex problem or making a significant decision, guide the client through a few minutes of conscious breathing to sharpen their clarity and concentration.
Self-Awareness Tool: Encourage clients to notice how their breath changes with different emotions or thoughts, fostering a deeper connection to their internal state.
Homework and Practice: Assign specific breathwork exercises for clients to practise between sessions, tailoring them to individual goals such as stress management, sleep improvement, or performance enhancement.
“Break State” Tool: Use a short, dynamic breath pattern to help clients shift out of a negative thought loop or limiting belief.
ALSO… Here are some tips and advice we provide to Coaches as well:
- Get Trained and Practise Yourself! This is paramount. Understand the physiology and nuances of different techniques. Experience the benefits first-hand to speak authentically and guide effectively.
- Start Simple so you don’t overwhelm clients with complex techniques initially. Begin with foundational breathing practices such as diaphragmatic breathing, box breathing, or a simple 4-7-8 breath.
- Explain the “Why.” People love to know exactly why they are doing what they’re doing and what is in it for them! Briefly articulate the benefit of the breathwork you’re introducing (e.g., “This will help us activate the parasympathetic nervous system so we can think more clearly,” or “This breath helps to re-energise you”). This also increases client buy-in.
- Pay attention to how clients respond. Some may find certain techniques uncomfortable. Be flexible and offer alternatives. Breathwork should never feel forced or distressing.
- Emphasise Consistency over Intensity: Encourage short, regular practices (e.g., 2-5 minutes daily) rather than long, infrequent sessions. Consistency builds lasting change.
- While breathwork is powerful, recognise its limits. For clients with severe trauma or complex mental health conditions, know when to refer them to a qualified therapist or clinical professional, especially if you are not a trained psychologist, psychiatrist, or psychotherapist who knows how to handle intense emotional release responsibly. It’s about them, not your ego!!
- Integrate Naturally. Weave breathwork into your existing coaching framework rather than making it a separate, standalone component. It should feel like a natural extension of your support for the client’s goals.
